DMV knowledge test passing scores by state (19 states)
Here is the written knowledge test format for the 19 states where we have checked it against official state sources: how many questions, and how many you need to get right. The other 31 states are not listed because we have not verified them, and a wrong number would do more harm than a missing one.

"Share" is the passing number divided by the number of questions, rounded. *The Texas DPS pages we checked do not print the question count or pass mark, so the Texas figures (30 questions, 21 correct) come from the Texas Driver Handbook as widely reported and could not be confirmed on a DPS web page; check with your DPS office. Where a state publishes a percentage, the number of correct answers is worked out from it.
Reading the table
- Formats range from 18 to 50 questions across these states.
- The share required runs from 70% to 88%.
- Short tests allow very few mistakes, so a single misread question matters more.
Important limits of this list
- It covers the standard written knowledge test. Teens, adults, renewals and out-of-state transfers can face a different test or none at all.
- Time limits and retake rules are not shown: we have not confirmed them for every state.
- Formats change. Treat the official page in the last column as the authority.
